Call for Abstract (including Grants and Awards)

Closed acceptance of abstract

Oral and poster contributions on any aspect of meteoritics and planetary science are invited. Abstracts should be submitted using the instructions on submission site. Only one abstract per first author will be considered for oral presentation and one abstract per first author will be considered for poster presentation except Special sessions. The deadline for abstracts is May 14, 2015, 5:00 p.m. U.S. Central Daylight Time (GMT -5).

Contributors are requested to indicate one of the scientific topics which most closely describes their work.

Grants and Awards

A limited number of student grants and presentation awards will be available to attend the meeting. Graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to apply. In addition, Meteoritical Society Travel Awards for Post-Doctoral and Graduate student members will be available. Applicants must be the sole or senior author and must be the presenter. The awards are competitive and based on the merit of the abstract. The purpose of the grants is to encourage those with limited sources of funding to attend the meeting. Grant applicants will be notified of the decision after the program is finalized (June 15).  There may be some travel money from the Meteoritical Society available for professional scientist from low income or lower-middle income countries but that preference will be given to graduate students and post doctoral researchers (see below.)

Student Travel Grants: Generous travel support ($18,000) is provided from the Barringer Crater Company for graduate and undergraduate students from any country. Applicant must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*. NASA travel grants (tentative) are for students from US institutions.

2015 Brian Mason Award: ($1000) sponsored by Meteorite Times Magazine and the International Meteorite Collectors Association (IMCA). If selected for this award, the student must submit a ~2500-word popular article based on their own research for publication in Meteorite Times by October 1, 2015, and an essay for IMCA’s newsletter, Insights. Applicant must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*.

Planetary Studies Foundation Awards: (2 students for $1,000 each). Applicant must be a US citizen. Applicant must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*.

Presentation Awards: Gordon A. McKay Award ($1000) for best oral presentation and four Wiley Awards ($500 each) for outstanding presentations by students. Applicant must be a student at the time of the meeting and submit an abstract for oral presentation. Applicant must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*.

Meteoritical Society Travel Awards for Post-Doctoral and Graduate Student Members*: A limited number of awards funded by the Meteoritical Society will be available for Post-doctoral researchers (within 2 years after receiving PhD or equivalent degree) or graduate students. Total $4,000 for travel by International Members with limited financial resources (low income or lower-middle income countries) is available. This support may be available for professional scientists but that preference will be given to Post-doctoral researchers and graduate students.  In addition $6,000 will be awarded to competitive Post-doctoral researchers or graduate students from any country. Grant applicants will be notified of the decision of the Local Organizing Committee after the program is finalized (June 15).  Applicant must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*.

In addition to above grants and awards, we are pleased to announce new student grants. These grants have special restrictions and selection criteria. Qualifying students must submit their request from specific website (NOT from abstract submission site.)

National Institute for Polar Research (NIPR) and Japan Polar Research Association (JPRA) Travel Awards: Travel awards will be available from NIPR and JPRA for Japanese students. Applicants must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*, must be the sole or senior author, and must be the presenter. Application will be reviewed by NIPR and JPRA and must be submitted to Prof. Kojima. Students who want to apply for this award must submit a copy of abstract and a forwarded copy of the e-mail confirmation for the submitted abstract. An application must be submitted by May 14 (same as the abstract deadline.) NIPR and JPRA will make the selections and we expect to notify students by June 15. Up to four students are expected receiving awards.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) Student Travel Awards: Travel awards will be available from JAXA/ISAS for Japanese students.  Applicants must be a member of The Meteoritical Society*, must be the sole or senior author, and must be the presenter (oral or poster). Application will be reviewed by LOC and must be submitted to Kuni Nishiizumi.  Students who want to apply for this award must submit a copy of abstract and a forwarded copy of the e-mail confirmation for the submitted abstract. An application must be submitted by May 14 (same as the abstract deadline.)  LOC will make the selections and we expect to notify students by June 15. Up to four students are expected receiving awards.

NASA’s Mars Program Office Awards: NASA’s Mars Program Office has announced that travel funding awards are available for up to three (3) undergraduate and graduate students. Students who are U.S. citizens or legal residents are eligible for this program. The student travel grants are competitive and will reimburse travel and registration expenses. Applications are due May 14 (same as the abstract deadline). NASA Headquarters will make the selections and students will be notified in June. Information and the application. Important Note:

Students can apply for all applicable grants and awards but will receive only one travel award.

*If you are not a student member of the Meteoritical Society, you can become a member before the submission of your abstract. Annual student membership is $40.
